(Frequently Asked Questions)
How do you conduct your competition?
We use the queued judging format. We also go to great lengths to keep the average number of entries per a pair of judges to 8 or less to prevent palate fatigue. As a result we also use the mini-bos format to determine first, second, and third for a table category.
Why do you use electronic score sheets that are different from the standard BJCP scoresheet?
While the format may be different, what gets communicated to the entrant on our sheet is actually more than what’s on the standard BJCP score sheet. Judges are not limited to a number of lines and they’re asked to provide feedback on Drinkability.
Is it possible to see the scores of the entries that did better than mine?
We don’t publish the scores of the entries. Even if we did though it wouldn’t do the participants much good. Point totals should represent the quality of the entry (i.e. Outstanding, Excellent, Very Good, etc.). however competitions are not like Untapped or Wine Spectator, where something with a higher point total is better than something with a lower point total. Point totals are primarily used as a tool by a pair of judges to identify the best entries within their flight. When their flight is completed they look at the entries that scored the highest and then decide what to pass on to the mini-bos.
What is a mini-bos? I saw an indication that my entry made it to the mini-bos. What does that mean?
We could regurgitate it but this is site already has a whole document that explains it.
I have a question that’s not addressed here. What should I do?
