The Midwinter Home Brew Competition is an AHA & BJCP sanctioned competition open to any amateur home brewer age 21 or older.

The competition will be limited to 850 entries.

All 2015 BJCP categories of Beer, Mead, Cider will be accepted

All entries must be entered under the name of the brewer.

All mailed entries must received at the mailing location by the entry deadline - please allow for shipping time.

All entries will be picked up from drop-off locations per the deadline noted for each location. Please double check and verify your drop off location's deadline.

Under no circumstances will walk-in entries be allowed.

All entries must be handcrafted products, containing ingredients available to the general public, and made using private equipment by hobbyist brewers (i.e., no use of commercial facilities or Brew on Premises operations, supplies, etc.).

Please be sure to check all of the Entry Acceptance Rules prior to submission. 

The Beer Barons of Milwaukee, the Milwaukee Brewing Company, the Milwaukee Ale House, Moonlight Meadery, White Water Winery, or any of the competition drop off locations are not responsible for mis-categorized entries, mailed entries that are not received by the entry deadline, or entries that arrived damaged.

The competition committee reserves the right to combine styles for judging and to restructure awards as needed depending upon the quantity and quality of entries. All possible efforts will be made to combine or group similar styles. Combined or grouped entries will be judged according to the style they were originally entered in.

Qualified judging of all entries is the primary goal of our event. Judges will evaluate and score each entry. The average of the scores will rank each entry in its category. Each flight will have at least two BJCP judges or one BJCP judge and an industry professional.

Brewers are not limited to one entry in each category but may only enter each subcategory once. With the exception of: TBD, and with the stipulation that the beer/mead/cider entered be unique by use of a different base style, spice or fruit additive. Example: Only 1 entry each of 2a, 2b and 2c are acceptable (3 entries). Or - Multiple entries of Category 29A are acceptable if 1 was a cherry stout and the other entry was a cherry pale ale or blueberry stout.

For example, participants may enter a Belgian Blonde Ale (24A) and Saison (25B), but may not enter two Saisons, even if they are different brews. Exceptions

Disclosure of special and base ingredients, along with sweetness, alcohol strength, and carbonation levels will be required per BJCP 2015 guidelines.

Recipes are not required. Should an entrant provide their recipe they will retain the rights to it.

The Milwaukee Brewing Company may tweak recipe to fit there brewing system. Beer brewed by the Milwaukee Brewing Company remains property of the Milwaukee Brewing Company.

Moonlight Meadery is not responsible for covering shipping fees or packaging to their pro-am competition.

White Winter Winery may tweak recipe to fit there system. Cider made by White Winter Winery remains property of White Winter Winery.

Those submitting entries for the ramp up categories are encouraged to submit a third bottle. See Bottle Acceptance Rules for additional information.

Milwaukee Brewing Company, Moonlight Meadery, White Winter Winery, and the Milwaukee Ale House are not responsible for any travel or accomidations that a ramp up winner may incur as part of the ramp up experience.

Categories with a small number of entries may be combined at the discretion of the competition organizers. The Competition Coordinator or other qualified person will review elements of beer categories and styles with each panel prior to judging.

The Best of Show judging will be determined by a panel of senior level BJCP judges based on a second judging of the top winners.

Bottles will not be returned to entrants for any reason.

All entries become the property of the Midwinter Home Brew Competition.

2018 Awards


1st, 2nd, & 3rd place awards will be issued for each category.  Each award will consist of a medal and a gift card prize from Northern Brewer.  An honorable mention may be issued for a category should the judges feel that it is warranted, however no medal or prize will be issued.  Limit of one medal and one prize per an award.   


Awards to be announced after the awards ceremony presentation on the 17th at the Revere's Wells Street Tavern.  Both score sheets and awards will be available for pick up that night after the ceremony concludes (pictured identification required). Awards and score sheets not picked up will be mailed back to the participant the week of February 19th.  Results will be posted to the competition web site after the ceremony concludes and scores are available to the entrants when they log in using their site ID and password.

Awards Ceremony Presentation



The awards ceremony is shaping up to be a pretty nice event again this year.  We'll be kicking it off at 6:00 pm on Saturday at Revere's with Andy Jones from Good City Brewing presenting on the Good City story and what they focus on in the brewing process that separates them apart from the rest.  After the conclusion of the presentation we will announce the winners of the competition. If you're planning on coming to Revere's for dinner earlier that night we highly recommend you call in advance and get added to their seating list.



There will be awards for the Best of Show and Second Best of Show for Beer, as well as a Best of Show for Mead and a Best of Show for Cider.

One California Common entry (BJCP category 19B) will be chosen to be ramped up and brewed by the Milwaukee Brewing Company for serving at the Milwaukee Ale House*.
Moonlight Meadery
One Mead Entry (BJCP categories M1, M2, M3, M4B & M4C) will be chosen to qualify for Moonlight Meadery''s Pro Am Competition.
White Winter Winery

One Cider ead Entry (BJCP categories C1 or C2) will be chosen to be ramped up by White Winter Winery*.

*Participant will need to provide a complete recipe to the Milwaukee Brewing Company and White Winter Winery for the winning entry.  Final recipes produced are the property of Milwaukee Brewing and White Winter Winery.  Should Milwaukee Brewing or White Winter Winery extend invitations to the entrant to participate in the ramp up at their facilities all transportation and accommodation costs are the responsibility of the entrant.
